NEWS'DEN SIDSTE OLIE' NOMINATED AS OPERA OF THE YEAR
Niels Rønsholdt's opera 'Den Sidste Olie' ('The Last Rites') received a Reumert nomination in the category opera of the year 2022. The Reumert is the most prestigious theatre award in Denmark. 'Den Sidste Olie' with score and libretto by Niels Rønsholdt and directed by Louise Beck is produced by OperaNord together with Athelas Sinfonietta and premiered on Copenhagen Opera Festival 2022. NIELS RØNSHOLDTS OPERA 'THE LAST RITES' PREMIERES ON ICE TO GREAT REVIEWS At Copenhagen Opera Festival 2022, Niels Rønsholdt's new opera 'The Last Rites' ('Den Sidste Olie') was premiered at the ice skating rink in Copenhagen, staged by Louise Beck. The audience was placed on the actual ice together with singers and performers, while the orchestra played from outside the rink. The sold out performances received great reviews and was called "original and unique" and "a clear evidence that the opera genre still evolves". "OIL, OPERA AND THE HISTORY THAT HAUNTS US" - INTERVIEW WITH NIELS RØNSHOLDT The online journal for contemporary music Seismograf brings an interview with Niels Rønsholdt by Macon Holt about the upcoming premiere of Rønsholdt new opera 'The Last Rites' and the conceptual, political and methodical thoughts behind the work. Read here at Seimograf. 'COUNTRY' AMONG HIGHLIGHTS OF 2021 IN POLITIKEN AND SWR Danish newspaper Politiken includes Country among the best classical albums of 2021 and also the contemporary music staff on German radio SWR2 highlights 'Country' in their 2021 year review. GREAT REVIEWS FOR TWO RØNSHOLDT ALBUMS Two Niels Rønsholdt albums were released in November just one week apart, and as different as they are, both albums are receiving great reviews Niels Rønsholdt's solo piano piece Archive of Emotions and Experiences, Book 1: Birds, was released at Dacapo Records on 12 November. The work is recorded by the Greek pianist Lenio Liatsou. The critic from Politiken calls it " Wildly beautiful piano poetry of the kind that Rønsholdt can often evoke." The critic from Seismograf agrees: "In many ways, the composition is a communiqué encouraging a thematic reading about post-apocalypse and climate catastrophe. But it is also extremely caring, loving, welcoming. Altogether I believe this is my favourite from the piano literature of the 21st Century." Rønsholdt's cello concerto Country was recorded by the Polish New Music Orchestra with Jakob Kullberg as the singing solo cellist, joined by the singer Annekei and conducted by Szymon Bywalec. Country was released by Dacapo Records on 19 November. The critic from Politiken wrote: "Welcome to the prairie! Niels Rønsholdt creates deeply original music which both feeds the mind and hits beautifully in the stomach [...] The album with the country-playing singing cellist Jakob Kullberg centerstage is a dramatic, alien and yet familiar album that builds the strangest musical cultural bridges." Seismograf wrote: "The recording of the cello concerto Country - commissioned by the main character Jakob Kullberg - is so successful that it can easily bear a triumphal arch of statuettes and words of praise." The blog gregersDH also complimented Country: "Rønholdt's ’country’ music makes you constantly pick up your ears to understand what he's up to. Song after song is wrapped and blurred in layers of floating, almost oriental caresses or menacing hugs with melancholic death signals." STRING QUARTET IN 100 MOVEMENTS BY RØNSHOLDT The string quartet 'Centalog' is premiered 18 September 2021 by Taïga String Quartet at Frederiksberg Festspil. Niels Rønsholdt's 'Centalog' is a piece for string quartet in 100 movements. The music consists of unison melodies swirling by in high speed and spreading in multiple registers. The tones of the melodies leave traces in all four instruments and create music that at once seems to be and not be unison. The work is shaped like an abstract archive where each movement is one side of something symmetrical. Like biological shapes in nature - a leaf, a feather, an insect - the movements in 'Centalog' have a right and a left side. Sometimes they are right next to each other, at times they are far apart. "I have always been fascinated by archives, catalogues, collections - like objects in a museum that at first seem alike, but tiny differences hold each their own story and identity. I like the way that you must give these things attention in order for them to come alive in their particularity." Niels Rønsholdt says. ‘COUNTRY’ PREMIERED AT SPOR FESTIVAL 2020 Niels Rønsholdt's unique cello concerto ‘Country’, which is an hour long piece for singing cellist and chamber orchestra, was premiered at Spor Festival 2020 by Jakob Kullberg, Polish New Music Orchestra conducted by Szymon Bywalec. ‘Country’ takes starting point in the American country-folk music with european roots and is about the relation between human and nature, belonging, longing out and about authenticity and inauthenticity. The performance received a 5-star review in Aarhus Stiftstidende and online contemporary art magazine Kunsten.nu wrote: “As in Rønsholdt's other works the composition is filled with pathos and at the same time something more kitch and fragile. It alternates between ease and anger, longing and despair, hope and sorrow. [...] As the concert ends tears roll down the cheeks." The premiere at Spor Festival was the first performance of the full two-part version of ‘Country’, the first part had previously been performed in Polish Radio, Katowice. GREAT REVIEWS FOR 'BOOK OF PRAYERS' In a 5-star review of the premiere of Rønsholdts oratorio 'Book of Prayers', Kristeligt Dagblad calls it a “captivating experience” and states that Rønsholdt “with inventiveness and audacity (…) has composed a strong and thought-provoking paraphrase of the old music genre”. The contemporary music online magazine Seismograf makes a thorough reflection on the experience and the work and calls it “an elegant critique of authorities” and continues “It occurred to me that the piece in fact wasn’t about the good people of the streets in the old Eastern Germany but rather about the danger and ridiculousness of people praying in a herd. And that we as audience were drawn into this critique in a very subtle way(..). Elegantly done.” 'Book of Prayers' was commissioned and premiered by Mogens Dahls Chamber Choir, Athelas Sinfonietta and Golden Days Festival. "Gaze for Gaze truly was something else, and successful. Perhaps it was something like a slow, meditative mix of traditional Japanese Noh theatre, Danish pedagogy of the 1970s kind – asking everyone to join in, regardless of training – and curious minimalist avant-garde."
